The Corrugated Packaging Alliance (CPA) (Booth 401) will present results of the first-ever U.S. corrugated life cycle assessment (LCA) at the 2010 Transport Packaging Forum. The LCA studied life-cycle impacts of a U.S. industry-average corrugated product. It was conducted according to ISO 14040/44 standards with expert panel review. Findings will help producers and users understand the environmental impact of corrugated products, and document the industry’s sustainability story for package users and retailers seeking to select environmentally responsible packaging solutions. The CPA (www.corrugated.org) is a joint effort among the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA, www.afandpa.org), Association of Independent Corrugated Converters (AICC, www.aiccbox.org), and Fibre Box Association (FBA, www.fibrebox.org). Its purpose is to address corrugated material and industry issues.

The Logistics Support Activity (LOGSA) Packaging, Storage and Containerization Center (PSCC) operates the largest packaging applications testing laboratory in the Department of Defense. The laboratory is located in NE Pennsylvania on site at Tobyhanna Army Depot. The LOGSA PSCC Laboratory has the capability to simulate transportation rough handling, stack, drop and shock/vibration. The integrity and protection value of the total pack is tested here. The lab has the capability to simulate exposure to rainfall, high/low temperatures, humidity, altitude (low pressure), sand and dust, salt fog and salt spray. The lab also has smaller scale equipment for performing tests such as puncture, abrasion, tear, and water vapor transmission on materials, specimens, and smaller packages.
